The art pieces of Ashbal Hamzeh Secondary School for
Boys
|
1- “MY CLASSROOM” This piece is a blatant criticism of the school’s crowded classrooms which lead to frustration and aggression; there are on average 48 students in each classroom. The traces of violence in this piece are obvious when one examines the desks, chairs, and walls. The desks are damaged and cluttered as exhibited by the students to symbolize the aggression felt in their overcrowded classroom. |

2- “SIX ASSASSINATIONS” This piece is documentation of the assassination attempts on President Arafat’s life. Under each figure stands a chair, except under the sixth figure where the chair has been kicked away. The sixth figure is an indication of the success of the last attempt which took his life, as is believed by the students that Arafat was assassinated and did not die naturally. |

4- “ARABIC KITCHEN” This piece is about the Palestinian political situation. The students installed a traditional old stove and placed on top a pot to boil water. 7- “QUITTING SCHOOL” The students in this piece discuss a common practice in their school; dropping out at an early age in order to work with their families in shepherding or other menial jobs. The circle of photos represents a story of one student who quit school and is working in different jobs but has no steady income or sustainable future. |

8- “WHO KILLED PEACE?”” The students symbolize peace as a dead human being in this piece. The white coffin was lifted to symbolize people holding it up at a funeral procession. Although peace is portrayed as a dead person on its way to be buried, the students also believe that there is still hope in its revival as they place an olive branch and a white dove on top of the casket. |
