Green Adventures at Ad Dar

This past March 17th, the International Center of Bethlehem hosted a theater play by Al-Kasabe Theatre and Cinematheque in Ramallah called “Green Adventures”. Seven hundred children from seven different public and private schools from the Bethlehem area attended the performance. The children who ranged from ages 6-11 years old were invited to attend the performance and the entrance was free of charge.

There were three shows one after another throughout the day. The puppets they used were activated storytellers in forms of fruits and vegetables. The instructive play starts with a fight between the vegetables and fruits on who is better. Then they come together to fight the pineapple king who is taking over the control of the water well of which they are in need of to clean up to drink healthy water which will protect them from their anemia.

This play was designed to stimulate children's imagination, challenge their intellect on what they should be aware of with taking care of their bodies and inspire creativity. The play addressed the issue of anemia and the importance of eating vegetables, fruits and drinking water. It was an awareness campaign for kids who are in desperate need to know the importance of eating healthy. The theatre group didn't just tell the stories, they pried the kids open with vivid, powerful, moving images and conversations that drove them deep into memory and which will hopefully encourage them to be healthier.

This was not only an educational experience but a very enlightening one for the young audience. The ICB hopes they will do more similar activities in the future.
