Ma’an lil-Hayat – L’Arche Bethlehem

Ma’an lil-Hayat Center was established in 2009 in Bethlehem. It is considered the Palestinian partner for L’Arche International that seeks to create safe spaces for people with intellectual disabilities. The union brings together more than 160 partners worldwide who share principles of pluralism and acceptance, embracing all differences far away from gender, nationality, ethnicity and religious prejudices. The centre is open for students over the age of 16 with various intellectual disabilities such as Down syndrome, mental retardation and learning difficulties.

The Ma’an Center provides learning and integration opportunities through vocational training programs specialising in manufacturing various products using wool felting techniques, natural wool from Palestinian local farmers. The centre is considered the first and only centre in Palestine that specialises in this industry. In the beginning, they made religious souvenir products like Christmas tree ornaments and the nativity grotto that could be sold to foreign tourists.

Over the past years, the centre’s staff has improved their accuracy, quality and speed. In contrast, the decline of tourism worldwide during the coronavirus pandemic prompted them to design new products that could be marketed internationally and locally. The centre has started manufacturing bags, paintings, and decorative items and gadgets for kitchen utensils.

The Ma’an Center currently serves 40 male and female students in its two branches.  The centre provides a safe place for students to stay in school from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their schedule is divided into various activities that seek to achieve the centre’s goals: raising the self-esteem of people with intellectual disabilities, integrating them into the community, increasing their ability to be self-dependent, and developing their creative and artistic skills. The centre also educates parents on ways to deal with their children and change society’s attitude towards people with mental disabilities.

The Center employs 12 staff members and plans to establish a guesthouse to achieve financial sustainability and create job opportunities for its students. In one of its most important achievements, the Center collaborated with Inad Theater, Beit Jala, to train and empower its students using the tools of drama and theatre. Students performed in a play that toured several Palestinian cities and participated in a theatre festival in Germany.

The Center relies on exporting its goods to various European countries. The Center participates in most local bazaars and markets held annually, such as Christmas markets in Bethlehem. Although these markets are weak in terms of sales, they are always keen to spread the Center’s message to local communities.

تأسس مركز معاً للحياة في مدينة بيت لحم سنة 2009، وهو فرع لجمعية اتحاد الآرش العالمي الذي يسعى لخلق مساحات آمنة للأشخاص ذوي الإعاقة العقلية. يستقبل المركز الطلبة من الذكور والإناث الذين تزيد أعمارهم عن 16 عاماً من ذوي الإعاقات الذهنية المختلفة مثل متلازمة داون والتأخر العقلي وصعوبات التعلم.

مصطلح “لارش” في اللغة الفرنسية يعني سفينة ومن هنا تأتي فكرة الإتحاد الذي يجمع أكثر من 160 شريكاً حول العالم يتشاركون في مبادئ التعددية وتقبل الآخر. المؤسسات الأعضاء في اتحاد الآرش يتشاركون ثقافة واحدة نابعة من قلوبهم تحتضن جميع الاختلافات بعيداً عن التمييز ما بين الجنسين، الجنسيات، الأعراق والأديان.

يوفّر مركز معاً للحياة لطلابه فرصاً للتعلّم والاندماج من خلال برامج التأهيل المهني التي تختص في صناعة المنتجات المختلفة باستخدام تقنية اللّباد من صوف الغنم الطبيعي. يعتبر المركز الأول والوحيد في فلسطين الذي يحترف هذه الصنعة. في البداية، كان المركز يصنّع المنتجات الصوفية التي تأخذ شكل الرموز الدينية كمغارة الميلاد وزينة شجرة عيد الميلاد وغيرها من التحف التي يمكن بيعها للسياح الأجانب.

خلال السنوات الماضية، اكتسب طاقم عمل المركز من الحرفيين والطلاب الخبرة التي رفعت من دقة وجودة وسرعة العمل. في المقابل، تدهور حركة السياحة عالمياً خلال جائحة كورونا دفعهم للتفكير في تصميم منتجات جديدة بعيدة عن الرموز الدينية والسياحية، يمكن تسويقها دولياً ومحلياً. بدأ المركز في صناعة الحقائب واللوحات الفنية وقطع الزينة لأدوات المطبخ وغيرها.

يحتضن مركز معاً للحياة حالياً أربعين طالباً وطالبة في مقرّه الأساسي في وسط مدينة بيت لحم، وفرعه الثاني في قرية دار صلاح شرقي المدينة. يوفّر المركز مكاناً آمناً للطلاب بديلاً عن المدرسة يداوم فيه الطلاب من الساعة الثامنة صباحاً حتى الثانية ظهراً. جدول الدوام مقسّم لفعاليات مختلفة تسعى لتحقيق غايات المركز: رفع ثقة الأشخاص ذوي الإعاقات الذهنية في أنفسهم، دمجهم في المجتمع المحلي، زيادة قدرتهم على الاعتماد على أنفسهم، تطوير مهاراتهم الإبداعية والفنية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يعمل المركز على توعية الأهالي بالأساليب المناسبة للتعامل مع أبنائهم وتغيير نظرة المجتمع تجاه ذوي الإعاقة العقلية.

يعمل في المركز 12 موظفاً ويخططون لإنشاء بيت ضيافة كمشروع تابع للمركز، يساعدهم في تحقيق الاستدامة ويوفّر فرص عمل لطلابهم من ذوي الإعاقات. في واحد من أهم مشاريعه، تعاون المركز مع مسرح عناد – بيت جالا، ضمن برامج المسرح الدامج لتدريب طلابه وتمكينهم باستخدام أدوات الدراما والمسرح وقاموا بالتمثيل في مسرحية بائعة الكبريت مع الفنان خالد المصو، التي تجوّلت في عدة مدن فلسطينية وقامت بالمشاركة في مهرجان مسرحي في ألمانيا.

يعتمد المركز في الترويج والتسويق لبيع منتجاته على الطلبيات الخارجية والتصدير لدول أوروبية مختلفة. يشارك المركز في معظم البازارات والأسواق المحلية التي تقام سنوياً كأسواق عيد الميلاد في بيت لحم. وبالرّغم من ضعف هذه الأسواق من ناحية المبيعات، ولكنهم يحرصون دوماً على التواجد لنشر رسالة المركز للمجتمعات المحلية.

Needle Felting in Palestine

The “Needle Felting in Palestine” project was founded in 2015 by young artists Ramez Hanania and Oday Hreimi from Bethlehem. Unemployment and the need to create a job opportunity for Oday, the talented young artist, motivated him to search for a handicraft that would provide him with an income-generating job by investing his painting and crafting skills. He teamed up with his friend Ramez, a business administration graduate, to turn this idea into reality.

The duo started researching non-traditional handicrafts that the local market lacks until they discovered needle felting, the process of transforming natural sheep wool into 3D objects, like gifts and decorations, using a barbed needle. The duo used the internet to learn and master this craft by watching videos on YouTube. They bought some materials and equipment to experiment with from e-commerce websites such as eBay and Ali Express.

After months of experimentation, they mastered the craft and decided to start up the business. The high cost of raw materials and the difficulty of providing them made them look for local resources and suppliers. The duo started to create, photograph and sell different shapes, products and models on a Facebook page they created. The idea was well-received and encouraged by followers, friends and social circles, prompting them to develop the project on the artistic and managerial levels.

At first, the duo created products in religious artefacts such as the Nativity scene and Holy Family figures, which can be marketed during the Christmas season to local customers and tourists at bazaars and Christmas markets that were full of tourists at the time. After that, they created new products suitable for Easter, such as Easter bunnies and serving tray dished for coloured eggs.

Later, the duo began to create customised shapes and gifts that suit customers’ desires throughout the year, like felting personalised 3D characters. They started making gadgets and gifts for different occasions like angel ornaments for baptism parties and the bride and groom ornaments for wedding parties.

The duo confirmed it has been challenging to convince local customers of their hand-made products because they are used to specific traditional handicrafts such as embroidery, ceramics and olive wood products.

Ramez and Oday have participated in several local exhibitions and bazaars, such as Bethlehem Live Festival and various Christmas markets in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. The project was successful locally and reached some international customers by taking orders and shipping them to European countries.

تأسس مشروع – Needle Felting in Palestine – عام 2015، بمبادرة فنية شبابية على يد الشابين رامز حنانيا وعدي الهريمي من مدينة بيت لحم. كانت البطالة والحاجة لخلق فرصة عمل لعدي، الشاب الموهوب فنياً، محفزاً له للبحث عن حرفة يدوية تؤمّن له فرصة عمل مدرّة للدخل من خلال تطويع قدراته وأدواته الفنية في الرّسم والتشكيل. تعاون مع صديقه رامز، خرّيج إدارة الأعمال لتنفيذ هذا المشروع.

بدأ الثنائي في عملية البحث في مجال الحرف اليدوية غير التقليدية والتي يفتقر إليها السوق المحلي، حتى تعرّفوا على صناعة اللباد، وهي استخدام صوف الخروف الطبيعي كمادة خام ونخزه بالإبرة لعمل مجسّمات وهدايا وتحف زينة. استعان الثنائي بالإنترنت لتعلّم وإتقان هذه الحرفة من خلال مشاهدة الفيديوهات على اليوتيوب، وقاموا بشراء كمية بسيطة من المواد والمعدّات اللازمة لتجريبها من مواقع التسوق الإلكتروني مثل موقع E-Bay وAli Express.

بعد شهور من التجريب قاموا بإتقان الحرفة وقرّرا البدء في المشروع بشكل تجاري. ارتفاع تكلفة المواد الخام وصعوبة توفيرها دفعتهم للبحث عن مصادر محلّية ومورّدين لتوفير الصوف الطبيعي وخاصة الملون.

بدأ الثنائي بتنفيذ أشكال ونماذج تجريبية ومجسّمات مختلفة وتصويرها وعرضها للبيع على صفحة قاموا بإنشائها على الفيسبوك. لاقت الفكرة استحسان وقبول المتابعين من الأصدقاء والدوائر المحيطة بهم، مما دفعهم لأخذ الفكرة على محمل الجد وتطويرها من النواحي الفنية والإدارية.

في البداية، نفّذ الثنائي قطعاً تأخذ شكل التحف الدينية مثل مغارة الميلاد وشخصيات العائلة المقدسة، والتي يمكن تسويقها في موسم عيد الميلاد للزبائن المحليين والسيّاح في البازارات وأسواق الميلاد التي كانت تعجّ في السيّاح آنذاك. بعدها، قاموا باستحداث مجسّمات وقطع تناسب موسم عيد الفصح المجيد، مثل مجسّمات الأرانب وأطباق الصوف الملونة لتقديم البيض الملوّن.

بعد سنوات من الخبرة والإتقان، بدأ الثنائي باستحداث أشكال وهدايا مميزة تناسب رغبات واحتياجات الزبائن على مدار العام، مثل تنفيذ الشخصيات الحقيقية بتقنية الصّوف كهدية يمكن طلبها بعيداً عن المناسبات الدينية. وقاموا بتنفيذ توزيعات للمناسبات مثل مجسّم الملاك للعماميد ومجسمات العرسان التي يمكن وضعها على كعك الزفاف.

يؤكد الثنائي أنه لم يكن سهلاً إقناع الزبائن المحليين بمنتجاتهم والتي تعتبر تحفاً غير استهلاكية وليست دمى للأطفال كما كانوا يعتقدون. من جهة أخرى، كان من الصّعب للمجتمع المحلي تقبل نوع جديد من القطع المشغولة يدوياً بعيداً عن القطع اليدوية التقليدية مثل المطرّزات والسيراميك وخشب الزيتون.

قام رامز وعدي بالمشاركة في عدة معارض وبازارات محلية مثل مهرجان حياة بيت لحم وأسواق الميلاد المختلفة في بيت لحم والقدس. لاقى المشروع نجاحاً محلياً وتمكّن من الوصول لبعض الزبائن في الخارج من خلال تنفيذ طلبيات وشحنها لدول أوروبية.

Zaki Baboun

Zaki Baboun is a full-time visual artist based in Beit Jala who specializes in painting on olive wood. He began his artistic career about 30 years ago in crafting olive wood souvenirs, a traditional Palestinian handicraft that has been very popular in the Bethlehem area for decades.

For years, Zaki developed himself as a painter who combines fine art with olive wood. He created his unique line, which specializes in drawing Christian religious images on pieces of olive wood. He is considered a self-taught and self-trained artist who equipped himself with knowledge and experience through researching and experimenting, away from formal education. Zaki did not finish high school and dropped out of secondary school. However, he took some art courses in the basics of fine arts and painting, and his talent and passion were capable of making him an independent creative artist.

Zaki set up a small home studio where he practices his art and paints on canvas and pieces of olive wood. Biblical stories and characters inspire his paintings. He stated that historical sites like churches and mosques are an essential source of inspiration for his work as a visual artist who markets his products to foreign tourists and pilgrims visiting Bethlehem and the Holy Land.

As a Palestinian artist living under Occupation, Zaki carries the responsibility towards his homeland. Through his works, he tries to convey messages about the history of the Holy Land.

Zaki collaborates with Dar al-Kalima in several ways, like marketing his products in the art gallery and participating in group exhibitions. He has also tried to sell his products through touristic souvenir shops in the Bethlehem area. However, these stores have been completely closed due to the coronavirus pandemic since March 2020. Zaki currently suffers from low sales rate because the tourism sector has been inactive since then and is trying to adapt to the new reality by creating customized products according to the local customer’s demand.

Zaki faces some technical difficulties related to obtaining materials and equipment for his work. He said most of the materials available in the local market do not meet his needs as a professional visual artist, such as canvas, oil and watercolours, and paintbrushes. Therefore, he is always looking for ways to get the required materials from abroad.

Zaki looks forward to organizing his first individual art exhibition in the future. 

زكي بابون

زكي بابون من سكان مدينة بيت جالا، فنان تشكيلي متفرّغ مختص في الرّسم على خشب الزيتون، بدأ مسيرته الفنية منذ حوالي ثلاثين عاماً في أشغال التّحف الشّرقية المصنّعة من خشب الزيتون وهي حرفة تقليدية تشتهر بها محافظة بيت لحم.

منذ سنوات، قام زكي بتطوير نفسه كفنان تشكيلي يقوم بالدّمج بين الفن التشكيلي وخشب الزيتون واتّبع أسلوب رسم الرّموز الدّينية المسيحية على قطع خشب الزيتون. عمل على تطوير قدراته بشكل شخصي من خلال البحث الذاتي والاطّلاع على تجارب فنانين آخرين بعيداً عن دراسة الفن بشكل أكاديمي. لم ينه زكي تعليمه الأكاديمي فقد انسحب من المدرسة قبل الثانوية العامة ولكنه التحق بدوراتٍ فنية متخصصة في أساسيات الرّسم والتشريح وكانت موهبته الفطرية كفيلة بتطويره كفنان مستقل ومجتهد.

أسّس مرسمه الخاص في غرفة في منزله حيث يقوم برسم اللّوحات التّشكيلة على أقمشة الكانفاس وقطع خشب الزيتون. يعتمد في لوحاته على قصص الكتاب المقدس كما تشكّل المواقع التّاريخية والمقدّسات المسيحية والإسلامية في فلسطين التاريخية مصدر الهام أساسي لعمله كفنان تشكيلي يسوّق لمنتجاته للسيّاح الأجانب والحجاج الذين يزورون مدينة بيت لحم والأراضي المقدسة. يشعر زكي كفنان فلسطيني بالمسؤولية تجاه وطنه الذي يقبع تحت الاحتلال ويحاول من خلال أعماله إيصال رسائل وطنية ودينية للتّعريف بتاريخ الأراضي المقدسة، رسالة سلام من فلسطين الى العالم أجمع.

يتعاون زكي مع دار الكلمة بعدّة طرق من خلال تسويق منتجاته في جاليري دار الندوة والمشاركة في المعارض الجماعية التي تنظّمها دار الكلمة. وكان يقوم بتسويق منتجاته من خلال التّعاون مع بعض محلات التّحف الشّرقية السّياحية التي أغلقت تماماً بفعل جائحة كورونا منذ آذار 2020. في الوقت الحالي، يعاني زكي من ضعف في نسبة المبيعات ويحاول اختراق السوق المحلي من خلال تنفيذ قطع حسب رغبة وطلب الزبائن المحليين.

يؤكد زكي أن أسلوبه يتطلّب الكثير من الوقت لإنتاج قطعة واحدة مما يجعله مضطراً لتقليل عدد المنتجات ورفع سعر القطعة الواحدة. في المقابل، يجتهد زكي لتطوير نفسه وزيادة كفاءته ليتمكن من تحقيق إنتاج أكبر ويحافظ على سعر مقبول للزبائن المحتملين.

يواجه زكي صعوبة كبيرة في الحصول على المعدّات والمواد الأساسية لممارسة عمله ويؤكد أن معظم المواد الموجودة في السّوق المحلي لا تلبّي احتياجاته كفنان محترف من أقمشة الكانفاس والألوان الزيتية والمائية وريش الرّسم، مما يضطره في معظم الوقت لطلبها من بعض الأصدقاء عندما يسافرون الى دول أوروبية حيث تتوفر هذه الأدوات.

من وجهة نظره، على الفنان التأقلم مع متغيرات الواقع ومعطيات الحياة ويؤكد انه استمر في العمل في مشغله المنزلي أثناء جائحة كورونا وفترات الحجر الصحي. بالإضافة الى ذلك، يرى من تحديات الواقع فرصاً لاستلهام أفكاراً جديدة تولد من الألم والمعاناة.

يطمح زكي في المستقبل القريب إلى تنظيم معرضه الفني الفردي ويتطلع الى زوال أزمة الكورونا وعودة الحياة إلى مجاريها ليتمكن من تخصيص الوقت والجهد اللازم لتحضير حوالي عشرين لوحة لمعرضه الخاص.

Sawsan Rishmawi

Sawsan Rishmawi from Beit Sahour began her career by joining the artistic courses organized by the International Center of Bethlehem – Dar Annadwa at the beginning of the second millennium. She was one of the first staff members recruited by Dar Annadwa to conduct field research and questionnaires in local schools and universities to study the feasibility of establishing Dar al-Kalima College.

Sawsan masters crafting stained glass; she makes ornaments to decorate Christmas trees and candle holders. She practices her handicrafts in her small home workshop, where she has the essential equipment.

Her great passion for art encouraged her to participate in several artistic training courses in crafting glass, ceramics, silvers and olive wood in Bethlehem, Ramallah and other Palestinian cities.

Sawsan regularly participates in festival bazaars and local markets, especially Christmas markets in Bethlehem and Nazareth. She has also participated in various exhibitions in Italy.

With more than 20 years of professional experience, Sawsan has established her notable style. She has distinguished herself by crafting olive wood and leaves and integrating them with glass to create souvenir products. She confirms that most of her handmade products target tourists and foreigners, which prompted her to focus on Christian religious symbols in particular due to the high demand from tourists visiting Palestine in this regard. Sawsan added: “I feel that local customers are not interested in these products; therefore, I am always looking for new marketing ways to reach foreign customers”.

Sawsan took courses in digital marketing organized by Business Women Forum; she manages her Facebook business page: Shepherds Handicrafts.

However, she could not increase her sales rate and hopes to develop her page in the future, which she considers a powerful tool to promote her work as an artisan.

Sawsan considers ongoing and random experimentation as her strong point. She believes that what distinguishes a handmade product from one manufactured using machinery is the unique crafting method that makes a handmade piece look different from another. Therefore, she always seeks to give each piece a unique character through innovative colours, shaping and other designing and crafting techniques.

One of her most significant artworks was the famous Last Supper, which she designed using glass mosaic and managed to sell at an art exhibition in the United States.

Sawsan is looking forward to producing artwork in large sizes. This would enable her to participate in international exhibitions and thus achieve higher financial profits.

سوسن رشماوي

بدأت سوسن رشماوي من بيت ساحور مسيرتها الفنيّة بانضمامها للدّورات التي كانت تنظّمها دار النّدوة الدّولية مطلع الألفيّة الثّانية. وكانت من أعضاء الطّاقم الأول الذي جنّدته دار النّدوة للقيام ببحثٍ ميداني واستبيانات في المدارس والجامعات المحلّية لدراسة جدوى تأسيس مشروع كلّية دار الكلمة.

تتقن سوسن ممارسة عدّة حرف يدوية كتشكيل الزّجاج المقشّع وتصنيع زينة لشجرة عيد الميلاد وقواعد للشّمع، وتقوم بتصنيع منتجاتها في مشغلها المنزلي حيث تمتلك المعدّات الأساسية مثل فرن صهر الزجاج.

شغفها الكبير في الفن دفعها للمشاركة في عدّة دورات في مجالات الحرف اليدوية مثل الزّجاج والخزف والفضّة والنّحاس وخشب الزيتون في بيت لحم ورام الله ومدن فلسطينية أخرى.

تشارك سوسن باستمرار في المهرجانات والأسواق المحلّية وكان لها عدّة مشاركات في مدن في الدّاخل المحتل مثل الناصرة خلال موسم عيد الميلاد، وشاركت أيضاً في معارض مختلفة في إيطاليا.

من خبرتها العمليّة التي تفوق العشرين عاماً، شكّلت سوسن أسلوبها الخاص والذي تميّزت فيه كتشكيل خشب وورق شجر الزيتون ودمجه مع الزجاج كأحد أشكال التّحف الشّرقية، وتؤكد أنّ معظم منتجاتها اليدوية موجّهة للسيّاح والأجانب ممّا دفعها للتّركيز على الرّموز الدّينية المسيحيّة بشكلٍ خاص لما في هذا المجال من طلبٍ عالٍ من السّياح الزّائرين لفلسطين. أضافت سوسن: ” أشعر أن المواطن المحلّي لا يرغب باقتناء هذه المنتجات، وعليه أبحث دوماً عن طرق تسويق جديدة للأجانب”.

شاركت في دورات متخصّصة في التّسويق الإلكتروني مع منتدى سيّدات الأعمال، وتدير صفحتها التّجارية على موقع الفيسبوك بشكل شخصي تحت اسم: Shepherds Handicrafts

بالرّغم من ذلك، لم تتمكن من تحقيق نسبة مبيعات عالية وتطمح لتطوير صفحتها الخاصة التي تعتبرها أسلوباً ترويجياً لعملها كفنانة حرفية ولمنتجاتها.

ترى سوسن نقطة قوّتها في التجريب المستمر والعشوائية، وتعتقد أنّ ما يميّز القطع المشغولة يدوياً عن القطع المصنعة باستخدام ماكينات كبيرة هو ذلك التّفرد في طريقة التنفيذ اليدوي والتي تجعل كل قطعة تبدو مختلفة عن الأخرى. وعليه، تسعى دوماً إلى إعطاء خصوصيّة لكل قطعة من خلال التّجديد في الألوان وطريقة التشكيل وغيرها من تقنيّات التّصنيع وتعتقد أنها بهذه الطريقة تجذب الزبائن بشكلٍ أكبر.

من أهم الأعمال الفنية التي أنجزتها هي لوحة العشاء الأخير والتي صمّمتها باستخدام أسلوب الفسيفساء الزّجاجي وتمكّنت من بيعها في أحد المعارض في الولايات المتحدة.

تطمح سوسن إلى تكبير رأس مالها لتتمكّن من تنفيذ أعمال فنية بأحجام كبيرة تمكّنها من المشاركة في معارض دوليّة وبالتّالي تحقّق لها عائد مادي أكبر.

Reem Attieh

Reem Attieh lives in Aida refugee camp located near the northern entrance of Bethlehem. She graduated in 2014 from Dar al-Kalima College with a diploma in ceramic and glass.

She discovered her artistic talent from an early age, and whenever someone asked her what she wanted to do in her future, she always answered she wanted to become an artist or an engineer.

She continuously develops her artistic skills by participating in handicraft workshops, such as making/ crafting jewelry courses and wood recycling courses.

Four years ago, Reem established her own project called “Zaytouna” as a home-based workshop specialising in painting, drilling on ceramics, and designing art pieces that can be considered of high quality artistic and can be used in houses and kitchens. She also makes wool, embroidery, and crochet products.

Reem stated that she is very proud of her husband, who supports her in her artistic career, and explained that he works in tourism and has always assisted her in marketing and attracting tourists to visit her home workshop to buy souvenir gifts. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, their work was disrupted entirely, which left them frustrated.

She cannot equip her studio on a professional level due to a Lack of financial resources and difficulty in getting funding. She hopes she can obtain the necessary equipment to be capable of making her art crafts independently.

The pandemic, which completely interrupted tourism for more than a year and a half, formed a central turning point in her career path. Reem has come to see the need to design products of high artistic quality that could be functional and used in the house. This way, Reem was able to adapt her artwork to market her products to local customers and generate some income.

Attieh is passionate about experimenting through combining different raw materials to generate new product ideas. She believes that her strong point as an artisan is that she masters several craft techniques, including ceramic, glass, wood, epoxy resin, gemstones and jewelry making.

She added: “The Occupation makes us more creative and forces us to always think of new artistic techniques to express our love for our homeland, Palestine”.

ريم عطية

تسكن ريم عطية، متزوجة وأم لولدين، في مخيم عايدة للاجئين بالقرب من المدخل الشمالي لمدينة بيت لحم، تخرّجت عام 2014 من كلّية دار الكلمة بشهادة الدبلوم في الخزف والزجاج.

اكتشفت موهبتها الفنية منذ عمر مبكّر وكانت دائماً تجيب أنها تريد أن تصبح فنانة أو مهندسة عندما تكبر.

تحرص دوماً على تطوير مهاراتها الفنية من خلال المشاركة في ورشات فنية مختصة في الأشغال اليدوية كدورات في صياغة المجوهرات وأخرى في إعادة تدوير الخشب.

منذ أربع سنوات، قامت بتأسيس مشروعها الخاص تحت اسم “زيتونة” كمشغل منزلي يختص بالرّسم والحفر على السيراميك وتصميم قطع فنية يمكن اعتبارها تحفة فنية ويمكن استخدامها بشكل عملي في المنازل والمطابخ، من جهة أخرى تقوم بعمل منتجات الصوف والتطريز والكروشيه.

تفتخر ريم بالدعم والمساعدة التي تحصل عليها من زوجها الذي يعمل في مجال السياحة ولطالما كان يساعدها في التسويق واستقطاب السيّاح لزيارة مشغلها لشراء الهدايا، وتوضّح أن مجالات عملهم قد تعطّلت كلياً أثناء فترة جائحة كورونا مما سبب لديها حالة من الإحباط.

قلة الموارد المالية وصعوبة الحصول على تمويل تحول دون تجهيز مشغلها بشكل احترافي ليضم المعدات اللازمة مثل الفرن الخاص بالسيراميك لتتمكن من تصميم وتنفيذ منتوجاتها بشكل مستقل تماماً.

شكّلت الجائحة بكل ما حملته من تعطيل للحركة السياحية تماماً لأكثر من سنة ونصف، نقطة تحول مركزية في عملها. أصبحت ريم ترى أنه من الضروري تصميم منتجات بجودة وقيمة فنية عالية ويمكن استغلالها بشكل وظيفي وعملي. بهذه الطريقة، تمكّنت ريم من موائمة عملها الفني لتتمكن من تسويق منتجاتها في السوق المحلي وإدرار بعض الدّخل.

يستهويها التجريب والدمج بين المواد الخام لتنفيذ أفكار جديدة لقطع فنية، كدمج الخشب مع مادة الايبوكسي ريزين. وترى في ذلك نقطة قوّتها كحرفيّة أشغال يدوية، بالإضافة لمهاراتها المتنوعة وإتقانها لعدة مجالات ومنها: الخزف والخشب، النحاس والحجارة وصياغة المجوهرات.

تعتقد ريم أنها تعتمد على مصادر إلهام مختلفة منها الحالة النفسية والوضع السياسي والاجتماعي. أضافت: “الاحتلال يجعلنا مبدعين أكثر ويجبرنا على التفكير دوماً بأساليب فنية جديدة لنعبّر فيها عن حبنا للوطن”.

Randa Mansour

Randa Mansour, 27, obtained her associate diploma in Ceramic and Glass Art from Dar al-Kalima College in 2017. Since then, she has worked as an independent artist in her workshop, which she established near her family house in Beit Sahour.

Research and experimenting may be a vital characteristic of her work; Randa has developed new methods to transform the traditional ceramic and glass craft into a contemporary art capable of absorbing modern raw materials.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a severe negative impact on her business, previously relying on selling ceramic products to foreigners. This has provoked her to look for new ideas during the lockdown to make products that could be sold to potential local customers.

Randa experimented with epoxy resin during the quarantine until she mastered it and developed practical products such as candle holders and coasters, which became popular with local customers. Randa is known for her passion for combining different raw materials to create new products.

Mansour personally manages her social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, but hopes to reach out to more followers and achieve more interaction that positively reflects on rates of sales. Randa considers e-commerce a significant source of marketing, sales and income generation. In addition, she cooperates with some gift shops to reach local customers, and participates in several handicraft bazaars and markets in Bethlehem.

Randa asserts that local customers prefer functional products, such as olive oil and thyme bowls. She makes customized products that satisfy her customers’ wishes and recommendations. Unique designs and colours and reasonable pricing are essential elements to distinguish her hand-made products from mass-produced items imported from China, which invade the local market at the lowest prices.

Randa is proud of the continuous family support she gets. She said her brothers helped her search for raw materials and equipment resources to improve her workshop capacity. Furthermore, they assist her in the marketing and administrative work.

رندا منصور

نالت رندا منصور، 27 عاماً، شهادة الدبلوم في الخزف والزجاج من كلّية دار الكلمة عام 2017. ومنذ تخرّجها، تعمل كفنّانة مستقلّة في مشغلها الخاص الذي أنشأته بالقرب من منزل عائلتها في مدينة بيت ساحور.

ربّما يكون البحث والتّجريب ما يميّز عملها، فقد تمكّنت رندا من ابتداع أساليب جديدة لتحوّل حرفة الخزف والزّجاج التقليدية إلى حرفة معاصرة قادرة على استيعاب مواد حديثة.

كان لجائحة كورونا أثراً سلبياً على عملها والذي كانت تعتمد فيه على بيع منتجاتها الخزفية للأجانب، ممّا دفعها للبحث عن أفكار جديدة، خلال فترات الحجر الصحي، لتتمكن من تصنيع منتجات يمكن تسويقها محلّياً.

بدأت بتجريب مادة “الأيبوكسي ريزن” حتى أتقنت العمل بها وطوّرت بعض المنتجات العمليّة مثل قواعد الشّمع وقواعد أكواب الشاي، والتي لاقت رواجاً محلياً وإقبالاً من المستهلك المحلي. تُعرف رندا بشغفها في دمج المواد المختلفة لتطوير منتجات جديدة، ومن الأمثلة على ذلك، رسم الكروشيه على صحون الخزف، والذي طوّرته رندا لأول مرة في السوق المحلي ولاقى استحسان العامة.

تعتبر رندا التّجارة الإلكترونية مصدراً رئيسياً لتسويق منتجاتها اليدوية وإدرار الدّخل، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، تتعاون مع بعض المحال التجارية للوصول إلى الزبائن المحلّيين.

شاركت رندا في عدّة أسواق ومعارض للحرف اليدويّة في محافظة بيت لحم، ولكنها ترى أن هذه الأسواق ضعيفة وغير قادرة على جذب زبائن جدد من محافظات مختلفة، وعليه تعاني من ضعف القدرة الشّرائية ممّا يحدّد من مبيعاتهم.

تؤكد رندا أنّ الزّبائن المحلّيين يفضّلون المنتجات ذات الاستخدام المنزلي، مثل حافظات الزّيت والزّعتر والزّيتون. كما تقوم بتنفيذ بعض القطع الفنية بناءً على رغبة الزبائن، فتراها تبدع في اختيار الألوان والتّصميم لتقدّم قطعاً مشغولة يدوياً ترضي زبائنها وتتفرّد بتفاصيلها وتتميّز عن المنتجات الشّبيهة المستوردة والتي تغزوا الأسواق المحلية بأقل الأسعار.

تفتخر رندا بالدّعم العائلي المستمرّ لها، وأكّدت أنّ إخوتها يقومون بمساعدتها في البحث عن مصادر المواد الخام والمعدّات اللّازمة للنّهوض بمستوى مشغلها الخاص، كما يقومون بمساعدتها في النّواحي الإدارية والتّسويقية. تسعى لشراء فرن خاص لأشغال الخزف والسّيراميك، لتوفّر الوقت والجهد والتّكلفة.

Rajaaa Barbarawi

Rajaa Barbarawi is a visual artist from Hebron. She carries a diploma in Art Education and a BA in Contemporary Fine Arts from Dar Al-Kalima University for Arts and Culture.

Since receiving her Bachelor’s degree in 2018, she has been striving to apply for Art teaching jobs in public sector schools. Still, she has had no luck despite qualifying for advanced stages in the recruitment procedures so far. Barbarawi explains her interest in getting an art education job in government schools because such job opportunities provide financial stability and social security for artists. Moreover, having a convenient morning job allows her to work as an independent artist on her own time.

Barbarawi masters several handicrafts, including Ceramics, embroidery, making accessories and medals from manufactured materials such as beads and stones, photography, in addition to drawing Arabic calligraphy on some ready-made products.

Barbarawi participated in several national art competitions. She took third place in Karimeh Abboud Award for Photography, and she won Ismail Shammout Award for Fine Arts. She also participated with her short film at the “Seen” Festival for Video and Performance Art. Also, Rajaa participated in several local bazaars and one international exhibition in the United States.

Barbarawi believes that what distinguishes her work is honesty, simplicity, and proficiency in communicating her ideas. She believes that as a society living under occupation, Palestinians live under other levels of intellectual self-occupation. “The Occupation is a major source of inspiration for us as artists, but on a personal level, I draw inspiration from my father, who supported me significantly during my educational journey and passed away 20 days after attending my graduation ceremony”. She explained.

Rajaa manages two Facebook pages with her mobile phone to market her work: “Rajaa Handicrafts” promotes some of the customized products she develops for commercial sale. On the other hand, you can follow her second initiative: “Fannak Fi Sahnak”, which means “your art in your plate”. On this page, Rajaa shares her personal journey in losing weight and getting in shape; she posts recipes for healthy meals and photos of her cooking. She promotes healthy lifestyle tips and tricks and the benefits of working out and healthy eating. She developed this page as part of a social initiative that received humble support within the grant of artist Samia Halabi.

In the future, Barbarawi dreams of establishing her art studio that will enable her to work as an independent artist.

رجاء بربراوي

رجاء بربراوي، فنانة تشكيلية من محافظة الخليل. حاصلة على دبلوم تربية فنية وبكالوريوس في الفنون التشكيلية المعاصرة من كلية دار الكلمة الجامعية للفنون والثقافة.

منذ تخرّجها من برنامج البكالوريوس عام 2018، وهي تسعى جاهدة للتقدم والحصول على وظيفة في مجال التربية الفنية في مدارس القطاع الحكومي، ولكن لم يحالفها الحظ حتّى الآن بالرّغم من تأهلها لمراحل متقدّمة في إجراءات التوظيف. تشير بربراوي أنّها مهتمّة في الحصول على وظيفة تربوية في القطاع الحكومي لما توفّره هذه الوظائف من استقرار مادي وضمان اجتماعي للفنان بوظيفة صباحية تنتهي بانتهاء دوام المدارس، مما يفسح لها المجال لممارسة عملها كفنانة تشكيلية مستقلة في وقتها الخاص.

“كمعلمة تربية فنية، أرى دوري في مشاركة تجربتي مع الطلاب، المساهمة في اكتشاف مواهبهم الفنية وتعزيز قدراتهم الفنية والابداعية لخلق جيل جديد يقدّر الفنون ويفكّر خارج الصندوق”

تتقن بربراوي صناعة عدة حرف فنية يدوية ومنها: الخزف “السيراميك”، التطريز، تجميع الإكسسوارات والميداليات من مواد مصنعة مثل الخرز والأحجار، التصوير الفوتوغرافي، بالإضافة للرسم بالخطوط العربية على بعض المنتجات الجاهزة. 

شاركت بربراوي في عدة مسابقات فنية على مستوى الوطن ومنها: مسابقة كريمة عبود للتصوير والتي حازت بها على الجائزة الثالثة، جائزة إسماعيل شموط للفن التشكيلي، وشاركت بفيلم قصير في مهرجان سين لفن الفيديو والأداء. كما شاركت في عدة بازارات محلية ومعرض دولي في الولايات المتحدة.

ترى بربراوي أن ما يميّز أعمالها هو الصدق والبساطة والإتقان في توصيل أفكارها، وتؤكد “أننا كمجتمع فلسطيني يعيش تحت الاحتلال، نعيش مستويات أخرى من الاحتلال الذاتي الفكري”. “بلا شك، يشكّل الاحتلال مصدر الهام أساسي لنا كفنانين ولكن على المستوى الشخصي، أستمدّ مصادر الهامي من والدي الذي دعمني كثيراً خلال مسيرتي التعليمية وتوفّي بعد حضوره حفلة تخريجي بعشرين يوماً”.

Omar Hmeidat

Omar Hmeidat, 19, from Surif, Hebron province. He recently graduated from Dar Al-Kalima University with an associate diploma in Metalworking. He has joined the “Paltisana” Program, which seeks to develop local Palestinian artisans through providing technical and logistical support.

Omar explains that his uncle, who works in the precious metal monitoring department in Hebron, has played a significant role in encouraging him to enrol in this vocational diploma program, which would enable him to find job opportunities, unlike many academic majors.

While studying at Dar al-Kalima College, Omar worked in some metalworking factories in Hebron to gain practical experience in the field and learn the details of this market. However, he said he had been exploited by business owners who hired him for more than 10 hours a day for a salary that was barely enough to cover the cost of transportation and not even close to the minimum wage in Palestine.

Nature is a primary inspiration for his artwork. Among the projects he achieved during his academic journey, he designed silver necklace sets based on natural elements around us, such as stars, flowers and pomegranates.

Omar states that he creates his products with his hands from A to Z, and this is what distinguishes his work. He does not use manufactured templates or supplementary materials.

Omar confirms that his parents and family supported him during his studies. He added that his mother loves planting, and their house is full of fresh and green plants. This inspires him all the time to craft plant shaped products.

Omar is grateful to the faculty staff at Dar al-Kalima College, who gave him the knowledge and experience to enter the workforce as a metalworking artist.

Omar believes we are in the time of social media, which offers excellent advertising and marketing opportunities. Omar has recently started promoting his products on his Instagram page and aims to develop a professional online shop to sell his products. 

عمر حميدات

عمر حميدات، 19 عاماً من بلدة صوريف التابعة لمحافظة الخليل. أنهى دراسته الجامعية مؤخراً في كلية دار الكلمة بتخصص دبلوم فن الصياغة، والتحق في برنامج “بالتيزانا” الذي يسعى لتطوير الحرفيين المحليين من خلال تقديم الدعم الفني واللوجستي.

يوضّح عمر أنّ خاله الذي يعمل في دائرة دمغ ومراقبة المعادن الثمينة في الخليل كان له الدور الأكبر في تشجيعه لدخول هذا التخصص المهني والذي تتوفّر أمامه عدة فرص عمل على عكس الكثير من التخصصات الأكاديمية.

خلال دراسته في كلية دار الكلمة، عمل في بعض المشاغل في مدينة الخليل ليكتسب خبرة عملية في المجال ويتعرّف على تفاصيل هذا السوق. ولكنه يؤكد من تجربته الشخصية أنه تعرّض للاستغلال من قبل صاحب العمل، الذي يقوم بتشغيله لأكثر من عشر ساعات يومياً مقابل أجراً لا يكاد يكفي لتغطية تكلفة المواصلات ولا يقترب حتى من قيمة الحد الأدنى من الأجور في فلسطين.

تشكّل عناصر الطبيعة مصدر إلهام أساسي لعمله. ضمن المشاريع التي نفّذها خلال سنوات دراسته، قام بصياغة أطقم فضّة تأخذ أشكال متنوعة من الطبيعة التي حولنا كالنجوم والورود وحبّة الرّمان.

يرى عمر أن ما يميّز عمله في صياغة الفضة أنه يقوم بتنفيذ منتجاته يدوياً من الألف إلى الياء ولا يستعين بالقوالب الجاهزة أو المواد المكمّلة.

يفتخر عمر بالدعم المعنوي الذي تلقّاه من عائلته خلال فترة دراسته وحتى الآن وأضاف أن والدته تعشق تربية النباتات في المنزل ومن وحي هذه الهواية يقوم باستعمال أشكال الورد والنباتات في صياغته.

يوجّه عمر كل الشكر والتقدير لطاقم الهيئة التدريسية في كلية دار الكلمة، والذي منحه المعرفة والخبرة التي تؤهله لدخول سوق العمل كفنان مختص في صياغة المجوهرات.

يرى عمر أننا في زمن مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي والتي توفّر فرص دعاية وتسويق رائعة. وعليه، بدأ عمر مؤخراً في الترويج لمنتجاته من خلال صفحته الشخصية على انستغرام ويسعى أن يطوّر ذلك في المستقبل القريب ليكون لديه صفحة خاصة بمنتجاته الفنية.

 Nancy Taweel Salsa

Since her childhood, Nancy Taweel from Beit Sahour has distinguished herself in painting and art which she inherited from her father, who practiced his art in architecture. She considers her father a significant source of inspiration and support for her artistic identity.

After graduating from high school, Nancy was unable to study art due to the political situation. She went to Bethlehem University to study chemistry for two years, but that did not fulfil her passion. During that period of the first Intifada, Nancy volunteered at many local institutions and supervised art courses at summer camps. She painted murals for dabkeh dance groups as backgrounds for their stage performances. Her name began to shine at Beit Sahour as a visual artist.

Later, she had an opportunity to study interior design at the Middle University College in Jordan. After returning home, Nancy worked in the design field for ten years and formed a duet with her carpenter husband specialized in designing and making interior décor.  

Nancy enjoys a rich work experience after working with several institutions, including:

Tamer Institute for Community Education, Nancy worked as an illustrator for children’s stories.

Al-Quds Educational TV, Nancy worked as a designer for television programs, especially children’s programs and cartoons.

Dar Al-Kalima University, Nancy worked as a lecturer for design and product development modules. She also worked as an art teacher in local schools for more than a decade.

Nancy produced an installation art project titled: “My Golden Dreams”, which was exhibited in New York City. This piece of art featured 199 keys that express 199 dreams. The keys were displayed on a sleeping pillow, and each key represented one specific personal dream.

Nancy is a multi-disciplinary artist experienced in several handicrafts’ techniques, including paper recycling, glass, jewellery and mosaic glass. She developed her artistic skills and capacity through participating in all the art courses organized by The International Center of Bethlehem – Dar Annadwa, where she worked for years.

Nancy established her own business: Deco Art, specializing in designing mosaic glass, and she promotes her products using her Facebook page: Deco Art. She added that one of the most popular products is mosaic-glass mirrors, especially since they come in distinctive colours and designs.

She currently works for Dar Al-Kalima leading the “Handicrafts Development in Palestine” project. This passionate program functions as an incubator to support local artisans of different ages and specializations. It provides them with logistical, administrative and technical support to develop the traditional Palestinian crafts.

نانسي الطويل سلسع

منذ طفولتها، تميّزت نانسي الطويل من مدينة بيت ساحور في مجالات الرّسم والفن الذي تشرّبتهُ من والدها الذي كان يمارس فنّه في مجال البناء المعماري، وتعتبره مصدر الهام أساسي شكّل هويّتها الفنية ودعمها خلال مسيرتها.

بعد تخرّجها من الثّانوية العامة، لم تتمكن من دراسة الفن بالنّظر للواقع السياسي آنذاك، فالتحقت في جامعة بيت لحم في تخصص الكيمياء لمدة عامين ولكن ذلك لم يلبي شغفها. خلال هذه الفترة، أثناء الانتفاضة الأولى، تطوّعت في الكثير من المؤسسات المحلية وكانت تشرف على الدورات الفنية في المخيمات الصيفية وتقوم برسم الجداريات لفرق الدبكة الشعبية كخلفيات لعروضهم الراقصة، وبدأ يلمع اسمها في بيت ساحور كفنانة تشكيلية.

عندها، كان أمامها فرصة لدراسة هندسة الديكور في الأردن، التحقت في الكلية الجامعية المتوسطة ودرست التصميم الداخلي. وبعد عودتها إلى أرض الوطن، عملت في مجال تصميم الدّيكور لمدة عشر سنوات وشكّلت مع زوجها الذي يعمل في النّجارة ثنائياً مختصاً في تصميم وتنفيذ الديكور.

تتمتّع نانسي بخبرة عملية غنيّة ومتنوّعة اكتسبتها بشكل تراكمي من خلال العمل مع عدّة مؤسسات ومنها:

مؤسسة تامر للتّعليم المجتمعي، والتي عملت ضمنها في مجال رسومات القصص المصوّرة الموجّهة للطفل.

تلفزيون القدس التربوي، والتي عملت ضمنه كمصمّمة ومنفذة ديكورات للبرامج التلفزيونية وخاصة برامج الأطفال بالإضافة لرسم الشخصيات الكرتونية.

عملت كمعلمة للتربية الفنية في مدارس محلية لأكثر من عشر سنوات، وعملت في كلية دار الكلمة كمحاضر لمساقات التصميم وتطوير المنتج.

عملت في مجال الفن التركيبي ((Installation Art وأنجزت عملاً فنياً تركيبياً بعنوان: My Golden Dreams – والذي تم عرضه في مدينة نيويورك والذي تضمن 199 مفتاح يعبّر عن 199 حلم، كل مفتاح يحتوي على بطاقة تعريفية لحلم معين وتم وضعهم جميعاً على وسادة للنوم.

تتقن العمل في مجالاتٍ فنية متنوعة ومنها: إعادة تدوير الورق والزجاج وصياغة المجوهرات. شاركت في عدة دورات فنية في دار الندوة الدولية وبعد تجربة عدة حرف يدوية اكتشفت شغفها الأكبر في مجال الزجاج الفسيفسائي.

أسست مشروعها الخاص تحت اسم “ديكو آرت” والذي يختص في تصميم الزجاج الفسيفسائي، ولديها صفحة على الفيسبوك بعنوان: Deco Art. من أكثر المنتجات التي لاقت رواجاً واستحسان الزبائن هي المرآة المعمولة بأسلوب الزجاج الفسيفسائي وخاصة أنها تأتي بتصميم وألوان مميزة.

تعمل حالياً كمديرة لبرنامج “تطوير الحرف اليدوية في فلسطين”، المشروع الذي يحقّق شغفها والذي من خلاله تقوم برفع مستوى الحرفيين الفلسطينيين بطرقٍ مختلفة. يوفّر هذا البرنامج حاضنة لدعم الحرفيين والحرفيات المحليين بمختلف أعمارهم واختلاف تخصصاتهم ومنتجاتهم. ترى نانسي أن الحرف التقليدية في فلسطين تواجه خطر الاندثار ويأتي هذا البرنامج كاستجابة للمحافظة على هذه الحرف وتطويرها بشكلٍ معاصر يحافظ على أصالتها في أنٍ واحد.

In Artisans, Glass and Ceramic

Mervat Giacaman

Mervat Giacaman is an independent artisan from Bethlehem who works in her home workshop crafting glass and artefacts.

She first explored handicrafts by chance when she participated in an intensive course in ceramic and glass art, organized by the International Center of Bethlehem – Dar Annadwa in 2003. Her need for work might have led her to participate in a vocational course hoping it would give her skills to create job opportunities. At that time, as a result of the outbreak of the second Intifada, her husband had lost his job, and she had to find solutions and knock on new doors to secure a job that could contribute to improving the economic situation of her family.

 Mervat stated that participating in that course was a turning point in her life, as it equipped her with a handicraft capable of creating a job opportunity for her and then for her family members who started working with her later. The family converted a small garage next to their house into a home atelier that functions as an income-generating family business.

Mervat is always keen to participate with her products in local festivals and annual bazaars such as Christmas markets and seasonal exhibitions. By doing so, she reaches new customers by expanding her circle in different cities. However, Mervat believes that these markets lack good marketing strategies and could attract new customers to achieve higher sales rates.

Based on her practical experience in the local market, Mervat established her unique line. Her work focuses on designing religious and Christian ornaments using stained glass; she creates Christmas tree ornaments using religious symbols like angels, crosses and bells. In addition to these seasonal products, Mervat has manufactured pieces and gifts that could be used as offerings and souvenir gifts for events like weddings and baptism parties.

Mervat is proud of her proficiency in glass handcrafting and confirms that it is a creative art form and a beautiful method for recycling waste glass. She emphasized the importance of environmental messages she tries to deliver by creating her glass products.

In recent years, Mervat has been trying to strengthen her presence on social media platforms, which she uses to promote and market her work.

ميرفت جقمان

ميرفت جقمان، حرفيّة من مدينة بيت لحم تعمل بشكلٍ مستقل في مشغلها المنزلي في تصنيع التّحف الزّجاجية والقطع الفنية.

تعرّفت على مجال الحرف اليدوية لأول مرة عند مشاركتها في دورة فنية مكثّفة نظّمتها دار الندوة الدولية عام 2003، في تصنيع الخزف والزجاج. التحقت ميرفت في هذه الدّورة من باب الصدفة، وربّما كانت الحاجة للعمل ما دفعها إلى ذلك، حيث كان زوجها قد خسر وظيفته نتيجة لاندلاع الانتفاضة الثانية وكان عليها أن تبحث عن حلول وتطرق أبواباً جديدة لتأمين فرصة عمل يمكن أن تساهم في تحسين المستوى الاقتصادي لعائلتها.

شكّلت مشاركتها في هذه الدّورة نقطة تحوّل في حياتها إذ زوّدتها بحرفة يدوية كفيلة بخلق فرصة عمل لها ولكافة أفراد عائلتها الذين يقومون بمساعدتها. قامت العائلة التي تمتلك مخزناً صغيراً بجانب البيت بتجهيزه كمشغل بيتي ليتحوّل إلى مشروع تجاري عائلي مدرّ للدّخل.

تحرص ميرفت دوماً على المشاركة في المهرجانات المحليّة والبازارات السّنوية كأسواق الميلاد والمعارض الموسميّة، والتي تساعدها في تحيق انتشار أكبر على مستوى محافظات الوطن ومحاولة الوصول إلى زبائن جدد. ولكنّها تشكو من قلّة النّجاح التّجاري لهذه الأسواق حيث لا تستطيع استقطاب زبائن جدد من روّاد هذه المهرجانات، وعليه لا تحقّق نسب مبيعات مرتفعة.

من تجربتها العملية في السوق المحلي، وجدت ميرفت الخطّ الخاص الذي يميز عملها وركّزت على تصميم التّحف الدّينية باستخدام تقنية الزجاج المقشع. تميّزت بتصميم زينة شجرة عيد الميلاد والتي تأخذ شكل بعض الرّموز الدّينية كالملاك والصّليب والجرس. بالإضافة الى هذه المنتجات الموسمية، تمكّنت ميرفت من تصنيع القطع والهدايا التي تستخدم كتوزيعات في المناسبات الدّينية مثل العمّاد.

تفتخر ميرفت بحرفة الزّجاج التي تتقنها والتي تعتبرها أسلوباً لإعادة تدوير مخلّفات الزجاج وتؤكد على أهمية الرّسائل البيئية التي تحاول تسليط الضوء عليها.

حاولت ميرفت في السّنوات الماضية تعزيز حضورها على مواقع التّواصل الاجتماعي، والتي من خلالها تقوم بالتّسويق والتّرويج لمنتجاتها.
