Faten Nastas Metwasi

Faten Nastas Metwasi is a contemporary visual artist from Beit Jala, passionate about handicrafts and works as a consultant and a trainer in this field. She works as a lecturer and director of visual arts programs at Dar al-Kalima University. She has played a significant role in obtaining the official accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education for the diploma and bachelor programs.  

Growing up in an artistic family, Faten inherited her love for art from her father Fawzi Nastas who has worked for decades making sculptures in Palestine and enjoys a high reputation as a world-class stone sculptor. She learned from her father, who greatly supported her, the basics of fine art, painting and sculpture.

After graduating from high school, Faten enrolled in a bachelor’s program at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. This program made her explore contemporary art fields, such as photography, photo printing, video art, installation and performance arts. Here she realized that art could be more about the concept rather than technique.

After graduating from the Academy, she worked for the International Center of Bethlehem – Dar Annadwa as the Arts and Crafts Program Director. Faten was responsible for coordinating relevant craft courses with international trainers. The program’s objective was to revive traditional Palestinian crafts by training a new generation of artisans and craftsmen who enjoy a high level of design and implementation techniques and develop products suitable for local and international markets that represent Palestinian crafts and arts in the best way.

During those years, Faten also participated as an artist in all these artistic courses, which increased her skills and techniques in stained glass, infused glass, wax modelling and silversmithing.

Her latest work, “Lord, have mercy” or Kyrie Eleison – a Christian prayer, takes the form of graffiti on one of Beit Jala houses walls; it is a conceptual work of street art she did in December 2020. Faten is currently painting the same idea on canvas to participate in an exhibition in the United States. Faten considers this piece an artistic response to the religious conflicts that have invaded the region and the Middle East in general in the name of religion and God.

Curiosity and seeking to create originality are her primary inspiration resources. Faten is interested in researching concepts of home, belonging, human identity and identity fragments.

Faten has organized her individual exhibitions and participated in several collective exhibitions, adding that she participates with conceptual artworks rather than handicraft products. Faten makes handicrafts to achieve her pleasure and joy. She experiments in designs, shapes and colours to ensure her ornament products are of the highest quality.

فاتن انسطاس متواسي، فنانة تشكيلية معاصرة من مدينة بيت جالا لديها شغف كبير في ممارسة الحرف اليدوية، كما تقوم بالعمل كمستشارة ومدربة في هذا المجال.

تعمل كمحاضرة ومديرة لبرامج الفنون المرئية في جامعة دار الكلمة وكان لها دور كبير في اعتماد برامج الدبلوم والبكالوريوس بشكل رسمي من قبل وزارة التربية والتعليم العالي.

ترعرعت فاتن في عائلة فنية بامتياز، ورثت عشقها للفن من والدها النّحات فوزي انسطاس الذي يعمل منذ عقود من الزمن في نحت الحجر ويعتبر من روّاد النّحت في فلسطين ويتمتع بسمعةٍ رفيعة المستوى كنحات حجر على مستوى العالم. تعلمت من والدها الذي دعمها بشكلٍ كبير أساسيات الفن التشكيلي والرسم والنحت.

بعد تخرّجها من الثانوية العامة، التحقت في برنامج البكالوريوس في أكاديمية بيتساليل للفنون والتصميم في القدس. من خلال دراستها، تعرّفت على مجالات الفن المعاصر المتنوعة مثل التصوير الفوتوغرافي وتحميض وطباعة الصور الفوتوغرافية، الفيديو آرت والأعمال التركيبة والأدائية. هنا أدركت أن الفن يمكن أن يعتمد على المفهوم أكثر من اعتماده على التقنية. تؤمن فاتن أن قدرة الإنسان على استخدام يديه في نحت وتشكيل الفنون والحرف هي مهارة فطرية يتم تطويرها بالبحث والدراسة.

بعد تخرّجها من الأكاديمية، عملت في دار النّدوة الدولية كمديرة لبرنامج الفنون والحرف وكانت مسؤولة عن تنسيق الدورات الحرفية المختصة مع مدربين دوليين. كان هدف البرنامج إحياء الحرف الفلسطينية التقليدية وتدريب كوادر جديدة من الحرفيين المحليين ليتمتعوا بمستوى عالٍ في التصميم والتنفيذ يؤهلهم من تطوير منتجات تليق بسوق العمل وتمثيل الحرف والفنّ الفلسطيني بأفضل صورة.

خلال سنوات عملها في هذا المنصب الإداري، شاركت أيضاً كفنانة في جميع هذه الدورات مما رفع من قدراتها وتقنيات عملها المتنوعة في مجالات الزجاج المعشق والزجاج المصهور وصياغة الفضة.

آخر أعمالها الفنية هو عمل (يا رب ارحم) الذي أخذ شكل الجرافيتي على سور أحد المنازل البيتجالية كعمل مفاهيمي من فنون الشارع، نفذته في شهر كانون الأول من عام 2020. تعمل حالياً على تنفيذ نفس العمل على قماش الكانفاس ليشارك في معرض في الولايات المتحدة. يشكّل هذا العمل استجابة فنية للنزاعات والصراعات الدينية التي غزت المنطقة والشرق الأوسط عامةً باسم الدين والرب. وتوضّح أن مقولة “يا رب ارحم” هي صلاة كونية لكل الديانات نرددها دائماً ولكننا لا نمارسها في حياتنا اليومية.

ترى فاتن أن فضولها في البحث وعمل شيء جديد يشكّل مصدر إلهامها الأساسي، وتركّز دوماً على المفاهيم المتعلقة بالانتماء والوطن، هوية الإنسان وشظايا الهوية.

نظمت فاتن معارضها الشخصية وشاركت في عدة معارض جماعية، وأضافت أن معظم مشاركاتها في المعارض تندرج تحت أسلوب الأعمال المفاهيمية أكثر من منتجاتها الحرفية. تؤكد أن ممارسة الحرف اليدوية تأتي من رغبتها في تحقيق المتعة الشخصية أكثر من رغبتها في بيع المنتجات والقطع، تعتمد على أسلوب التجريب في الزخارف والأشكال والألوان وتحرص على تنفيذ منتجاتها بأعلى جودة تقنية.
